Rebecca.jpgThe Chautauqua Piano Program is unique in the world of piano instruction. The faculty teaches technique and interpretation in a traditional context while also embracing more holistic concepts in learning, health and human potential.

In Motion and Emotion classes as well as master classes and lessons, you will learn to relate physical motion and human emotion. You will learn how to read composers’ languages, to decipher the emotional content of the printed page and translate it into beautiful yet intense sound. You will see how technique and interpretation are really one entity, inseparably linked. You will find that the thrills of a fluid technique, limitless joys of interpretative possibility, and the fulfilling pleasures of genuine artistic expression are attainable without endless hours of repetitive practice.

Through superb instruction and creative guidance you will be introduced to an alert learning consciousness called flow-state learning. You will learn how to work with yourself more productively. Your practicing will become much more directed and efficient, and your performing much more reliable and exciting.

The faculty maintains rigorous standards for students, yet believes in establishing personal relationships that frequently last a lifetime. We accept a maximum of thirty pianists, who all have access to new Steinway pianos for practice. In this intimate and spectacular environment, you will have the luxury of a dazzling array of lessons, classes and performance opportunities—many more than most academic or summer festival settings.

I invite you to apply to Chautauqua, where you can freely explore your identity as a pianist. Chautauqua is truly the place to develop your artistic dreams.

"Chautauqua is a special and unique environment, surrounded by the beauty of nature, inspired by the many performances and lectures, and nurtured by a supportive and wonderful piano faculty. Piano participants are encouraged to find a personal voice in their creativity. With their new practice, teaching and performance facilities, as well as their relationship with Steinway, the Chautauqua Piano Program is an obvious choice for the serious and thoughtful musician."

"All of the teachers have incredible talent and are very helpful and encouraging. My playing changed immensely over the summer and I would highly recommend the piano program at Chautauqua to anyone."
