OBJECTIVES:The Chautauqua Sonatina Festival gives students of all ages the opportunity to perform in public, learn from other students and receive an adjudicator's critique. The public is invited to attend at no charge

ELIGIBILITY:Piano students of any age who are not professionals, not collegiate piano majors, or who have not won a first prize in any piano competition. Students must be currently studying with a teacher. Students who have received a first place award in the Sonatina Festival are not eligible to again compete in the same age category but may enter when eligible for the next age category.

REQUIREMENTS: One movement of a sonatina or sonata by any composer. Students must perform from memory and include any repeats. Children 10 and under may play without repeats. Students may use any edition, but arrangements or simplified versions are not accepted. Photocopies are allowed but must be in the public domain.


AWARDS:All performers will receive a Certificate of Participation with adjudicator comments. Other awards may be given at the judge’s discretion in recognition of outstanding performance. A First Award of Excellence includes an invitation to perform in the 2013 Honors Recital.

 

SCHEDULE: Sunday, August 12, 2012: Below is a tentative schedule. Final schedule for the festival will be emailed Friday, August 10th & also posted outside the Sherwood-Marsh Piano Studios. The Festival be begin at 9am and conclude about 12 noon.

  • 9 am– 10:30 am: Sonatina & Sonata movements – children, teens and adults
  • 10:45 am: Awards Presentation followed by Honors Recital (2011 Award Winners
  • 11am -12 pm: Master Class with Rebecca for 2012 winners.
  • The public is invited to all events!

Enter the Chautauqua Institution at the Main Gate. Parking is across from this Gate. Turn Left onto Palestine and follow it until you cross Hurst Street. The Sherwood-Marsh Piano Studios will be on your right.

The Chautauqua Institution is located in the southwestern corner of New York State. From the New York State Thruway (Interstate 90), take exit 60, turn left onto NY-394/North Portage Street. Continue to follow NY-394. From the Southern Tier Expressway (Interstate 86/Route 17) – if eastbound, take Exit 7 (Panama/Chautauqua Institution); turn left onto CR-33, and then right onto West Lake Rd./NY-394
