Arie Lipsky, Chamber Music Chair
Nicola Melville, piano coordinator
We consider chamber music to be a vital component of the Chautauqua Music Festival and an integral part of the Chautauqua experience. The majority of piano students form ensembles that participate in formal recitals and additional informal performances in the Chautauqua Institution community.
Students receive regular coachings from professional chamber musicians and groups. These professional and personal contacts broaden and enrich the experience of our students and begin musical partnerships that often endure well beyond the summer program.
For pianists, the formal section of chamber music coaching is between weeks 2 and 4. Every chamber music group will perform at the end of week 4.
A few weeks prior to the start of the program, the piano Chair will assign repertoire, and photocopies of the music will be sent out; students are expected to arrive at the festival ready to rehearse their chamber music piece.
"A unique aspect of the Chautauqua Piano Program is its length, allowing for multiple lessons, chamber music, & masterclasses with an outstanding faculty. There is also great opportunity to create long-lasting friendships with students, community members and generous donors who support the festival."
